AI Search Optimization vs SEO: What's the Difference?
SEO gets you ranked on Google. AI search optimization gets you recommended by AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews. Related disciplines, different scoreboards — and most local businesses now need both.
You may also see AI search optimization called GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization). Same discipline, different labels.
What SEO does
SEO — search engine optimization — is the work of getting your website to rank on Google's results pages. When someone searches "plumber plano tx," SEO decides whether your site shows up in the top three, on page one, or not at all.
The levers are well established: technical site health, page speed, keyword-targeted content, Google Business Profile completeness, local citations, and backlinks. Twenty-plus years of practice, and it still drives the majority of local discovery today.
What AI search optimization does
AI search optimization is the work of getting your business recommended inside AI-generated answers. When a customer asks ChatGPT "who's the best plumber in Plano?" the AI doesn't show ten blue links — it answers with two or three names. AI search optimization is what puts your name on that list.
The levers are newer and different: entity disambiguation (making it unmistakable to machines who you are), third-party corroboration (reviews, directory profiles, press — independent sources agreeing you're real and good), and citation-worthy content (FAQ-style, extractable answers the models can quote directly). 45% of US consumers used AI tools for local business recommendations in the past 12 months (BrightLocal, February 2026) — this is where a growing share of customers decide.
Where they overlap
Honestly? About 70%. Fast sites, clean structure, genuine reviews, accurate listings, and a complete Google Business Profile matter for both. An AI engine can't recommend a website it can't read, and Google's local pack still feeds into what the models know. Anyone who tells you SEO is dead is selling something; anyone who tells you nothing changed hasn't watched an AI answer box replace their click-throughs.
Where they differ
| SEO | AI search optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| Win condition | Rank in a list of links | Be the entity the AI recommends |
| Primary surface | Google results page | ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot |
| Key signal | Backlinks + keywords | Third-party consensus (reviews, directories, mentions) |
| Identity layer | Keywords you target | Entity the model understands |
| Measurement | Rankings, traffic | Mentions, citations, recommendations |
| Maturity | 20+ years of practice | Emerging — the playbook is being written now |
The genuinely new layer is testing: there is no "keyword planner" for ChatGPT. Knowing what AI actually says about your business requires asking it — repeatedly, across platforms — and tracking whether you get named, cited, or recommended. That measurement work doesn't exist in traditional SEO.
Can one replace the other?
No. They cover different moments in the customer journey. A customer might discover you through an AI recommendation and then Google you to verify — or find you on Google and ask ChatGPT whether you're any good. Businesses that win do both: rank where people search, get recommended where people ask.
Which should you do first?
If your Google presence is broken — no Business Profile, inconsistent listings, a site that loads in eight seconds — fix that first. It's the foundation both disciplines stand on.
If your Google presence is solid but you're invisible when customers ask AI, that's the gap AI search optimization closes. Start by finding out what AI currently says about your business: ask each major assistant for the best [your trade] in [your town] and see whether you appear.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI search optimization just SEO with a new name?
No — but the skepticism is healthy. The craft overlaps heavily (crawlability, content, reviews, listings), and plenty of vendors are slapping "GEO" on the same SEO retainer. The real difference is the win condition and the measurement: ranking in links versus being recommended in answers, tracked by asking the models directly. Ask any vendor which one they're optimizing for and how they measure it. The honest ones will give you two different answers.
Do I need both, or is SEO enough?
For now, most local businesses still get the majority of discovery from Google — SEO remains essential. But the AI share is growing fast, and unlike SEO, there's no established playbook your competitors are already running. Early movers have an opening that won't last.
How long does each take to work?
SEO typically shows movement in 3–6 months. AI search optimization is newer, but the levers (entity clarity, review velocity, corroborating profiles) can shift what models say in weeks to a couple of months — models retrain and re-crawl constantly. Neither is overnight, and anyone promising otherwise is selling something.
