What is AI search optimization?
AI search optimization gets your business recommended by AI. When your customers ask ChatGPT, Siri, or Google's AI answer box for the best roofer near them, the AI answers with two or three names. If yours isn't one of them, you don't exist for that customer.
You may also see it called GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization). Same discipline, different labels — "AI search optimization" is the plain-English name for it.
How it works
When you ask an AI for a local business recommendation, it doesn't show you ten blue links. It gives a direct answer: "Here are the best options near you," followed by a short list — usually two or three names.
To build that list, the AI reads what's published about your business: your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your directory listings. Then it decides who to recommend.
AI search optimization is the work of making everything the AI reads about you complete, accurate, consistent, and quotable — so the AI can find you, understand what you do, and confidently put your name on the list.
How it's different from SEO
SEO gets you ranked on Google's results page. AI search optimization gets you recommended when someone asks an AI. Related disciplines, different scoreboards.
There's real overlap: fast sites, clean structure, genuine reviews, and accurate listings matter for both. But there's a genuinely new layer too — testing how AI tools actually answer customer questions about your trade, tracking whether your business gets named or cited, and tuning your content so AI can quote it directly. There's no "keyword planner" for ChatGPT; that testing work doesn't exist in traditional SEO.
What it isn't
- A guarantee. Nobody controls these models — not us, not Google, not OpenAI. Anyone promising you'll "always be mentioned" is selling something.
- A trick. There's no secret file or tag that forces AI to recommend you. (If someone tries to sell you "llms.txt optimization" as the lever, walk away.)
- A one-time fix. AI models update constantly, so what the AI says about your business shifts week to week. It's a measured monthly program, not a project.
Who needs it
Any local business whose customers ask AI for recommendations — which, increasingly, is all of them. 45% of US consumers used AI tools for local business recommendations in the past 12 months (BrightLocal, February 2026). If your customers are asking Siri or ChatGPT "who's the best [your trade] near me," you want an answer to that question that includes you.

Frequently asked questions
Is AI search optimization just SEO with a new name?
Fair question — plenty of agencies are just relabeling SEO right now. The honest split: much of the craft overlaps (fast sites, real reviews, accurate listings help with both). What's new is the testing layer — measuring how AI tools answer real customer questions about your trade and tuning your presence so AI can find, understand, and cite you. Different scoreboard, and we report on each separately.
How long does it take to work?
Typically, first signals in 30–45 days; a solid presence in about 90 days; durable results in 3–6 months. Anyone promising faster is selling something.
Do I still need regular SEO?
Yes, if Google's classic results matter to your customers — and for most local businesses, they still do. That's why we offer both: AI search optimization gets you recommended by AI, SEO gets you ranked on Google.
